Zoysiagrass Mites

We have encountered a new pest on Zoysia lawns that has been identified as the Zoysiagrass mites. This mite is too small to be seen with the naked eye.

The symptoms are a yellowing along one edge of the grass blade, and a rolling of the edge of the blade. From the perspective of standing and looking at the lawn, the grass has a yellowish look to it. These pests tend to be found most often within the drip line of trees, although we have seen some symptoms in full sun. We first observed these symptoms in 1997, but it wasn't until later that the presence of the mite was confirmed at Kansas State University. We are looking at treatment strategies, but as of this writing, none have proven effective. At this time, the Zoysiagrass mite does not appear to permanently damage the plant.

We have seen some of these symptoms on almost every Zoysia lawn. We will keep you posted on any news regarding this microscopic pest.
